anyone heard of her?

by kevinwilson @ 2008-08-24 - 23:07:56

i discovered a new playwright recently.
though she lived around the time of shakespeare, she is a little less well known.
her name is aphra behn.
her most famous play is called 'the rover' and it is an amazing piece of work.
read it if you can. it's clever and funny, and occasionally startling.

let us all know if you recommend anyone.
it's great to discover something new!

Reputation is an idle and most false imposition; oft got without merit and lost without deserving.

your favourite?

by kevinwilson @ 2008-08-08 - 22:24:43

do you have a favourite shakespeare play?
if so, why?

at the moment, i'm thinking i'd vote for othello.
it's got everything - scheming and plotting, love, tragedy, touches of comedy.
shakespeare hit the heights when he wrote tragedies, too, though he was good at nicking stuff from other writers (particularly seneca, a roman writer).

anyway, i'd be interested to know if you had a favourite ...

learning lines

by kevinwilson @ 2008-08-03 - 22:22:22

i will close with the words of His purest handmaiden Joanna Southcott:
'and now, as fears increase, i tell you here,
that every sorrow they shall fast increase,
the wars their tumults they shall never cease
till the hearts of men will turn to me.'

that's part of a long speech of mine, and i wanted to see if i could type it out without looking at the play script.
i could.

thank you for listening!
